Literature Circle Blog Question #2

How is the main character in your book similar to or different from the main character from another work read in English 2A so far? Use textual evidence to support your view.

  1. In The Color of Water by James McBride the main character resembles Scout from the famous novel To Kill a Mockingbird. These two characters resemble each other through their voice and actions. Both of the characters are the narrators of the novels they are in. In The Color of Water, James shows the reader an innocent child as well as Scout does in To Kill a Mockingbird. An example of this would be James calling his mother “Mommy” in the story. Another example of innocence in Scout is her understanding of Tom Robinson’s trial.

  2. The main character in the book The Things They Carried seems a lot different from other characters in previous stories. First of all, he is a young man in war who does not want to be there. This has not been seen in other characters. Next, unlike most characters, he has to face death on almost a regular basis. The point is that he is in my opinion, a type of character that is uncommon in most novels but he fits very well into the concept of the story.

  3. The main character in the novel Into the Wild by John Krakauer is Chris McCandless. One of the first differences between Chris and another character in a different book, Odysseus, is that he does not call himself his own name. He has made up a new name, Alex. Alex and Odysseus both share a love for adventure, but Alex has much more care for nature than Odysseus does. This is shown through the great appreciation and awe Alex displays on his journey alone in the wild. Also, Alex likes being alone, where Odysseus is always surrounded by his loyal crew. Next, Alex and Odysseus are both really good at one thing, surviving. Alex doesn’t have to go up against giant monsters and gods, but Alex really knows how to survive in the wild. The last difference is that in the book, Alex dies, but in The Odyssey, Odysseus does not die.

  4. The main character in geeks seem to be almost complete opposites to the heros we have been seeing before. For example the main characters are very quiet and looked at as the underdog. But there are some characteristics that are the same for geeks man characters such as a hard struggle to become socially acceptable. For example in the text it says that they are bullied by the jocks but they have to get through it somehow.

  5. Alex in my groups book is like Odysseus in the odyssey. One of the ways is, they both go on a journey. In the odyssey Odysseus gets help from a lot of people but alex dose not want help. Alex is not looking for his dad, in fact he is more of trying to get away from his parents when Odysseus is trying to get home.

  6. I’d go out on a limb to say that Jon Katz is a bit like Miss Stephanie Crawford, at least in how persistent he is in his search for more information. Such as when he jokingly refers to in the narrative, ““I threatened all sorts of mayhem if he didn’t write down details of the trip and e-mailed them to me.”” (51). To understand something unknown and begin to deconstruct its inner workings. He also has a bit of pride streak, though its a bit introverted.

  7. In the book Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, Mitch reminds me of Creon in the play Antigone. I believe these to characters are similar because of regret. Mitch regrets all the time he wasted and didn't get to spend with Morrie and Ceron makes a horrible decision that leads to many deaths and that he regrets. Mitch and Ceron just got to caught up in things to realize what they really should be doing. I think they are both good people but when they get to much money or to put power they get blinded to what the right thing to do is.

  8. The main character in The Color of Water is James McBride. He is a young African American boy who is very curious of many things and is very innocent. This leads me to believe he relates best with Scout. Examples of this is how he's always questioning his mother about her past and why he is colored and she isn't. Also instead of calling her Mom or Mother he calls her Mommy. However, he also seems to easily pick up on things like how Scout does with racism.

  9. In Tuesdays with Morrie, Morrie reminds me of Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird. I think this because both are very wise. They also both give someone of a younger age advice and teach them life lessons. For example, at the end of the Tom Robinson trial Jem begins to ask Atticus a lot of questions and many times in the book Scout asks Atticus questions about life and other people in the town. Similarly, Mitch had Morrie as a professor in college. Even though he loses touch with Morrie after he graduates, sixteen years later he comes back to find his old professor dying, and with many questions to ask him about life.

  10. The main character in Into The Wild is Chris McCandless. He's a guy who is very independent. He was raised in a higher middle class family and he was kind of spoiled in a way. Everyone just thought Chris was a kind of guy that is more down-to-earth and hard working and focused on whatever he has going on, that was true but he also liked taking long road trips whenever there was a big enough break where he could just go and not worry about anything. I think that Chris reminds me of Jem at the beginning of the book, before the verdict of the trial. I think he is because he kind of had a care free attitude and just went along with some things but then something happens or just randomly changes them and that is why I see them kind of like each other

  11. The main character in Geeks is Jon Katz. Jon Katz is a reporter and his job is to take in his surroundings. Jon Kats loves technology, and is very observant. Another character found in English 2A can be compared to Jon; this person is Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout also observes what is happening around her and she learns from the things see sees. Like a reporter, she sees things from a neutral perspective. Even though Scout does is neutral about ideas because she is young; and Jon is neutral because its his job they both are similar.

I have been reading the book Geeks, one main character from this book is Jon Katz. Jon is really smart and good at what he does. Kind of like Atticus from To Kill A Mockingbird, he is extremely smart and has to be that way to be a successful lawyer like he is. Someone who is completely opposite of Jon is Bob Ewell from To Kill a Mockingbird, he never got an education and was about as sharp as a marble. Lenny from Of Mice and Men, was another character who is nothing like Jon. He is a little slow in the head and wasn't much good at anything but lifting heavy things.

    1. I agree that Lenny and Jon are very different, but did you think that they could have similar traits too? One trait that Lenny and Jon share is their kindness, Jon cares for his family and the two geeks very much similar to the way that Lenny loves fuzzy animals and George.

In the book tuesday with morrie, morrie remind of atticus of killing of the mockingbird because of the way that they have wisdom. They kind similar because they are both old, having wisdom, being smart about things, and they both help someone. When scout and jem need help with coming to age and when morrie help mitch with a final class. They both have learn things the hard way of life and showing they how not make the same mistake. They have both skills that takes a long time to learn.

  14. The main character in Into the Wild is Chris McCandless. He is a quiet, sufficient, kept to himself guy. He left his home telling no one where he was going or what he was doing and never looked back. He had to hitch hike, bike, and drive all the way to Alaska. Why? Because that’s what he felt like doing. One of the main characters in To Kill A Mockingbird is Atticus, he is a smart, well spoken guy. These two characters are much different in many ways, Atticus would never abandon loved ones he would also never steal things like Chris had to throughout the book.

    1. I agree, Atticus is very loyal and loving towards his family. However, do you feel that Chris also cares about his family yet felt that what he did in going off to adventure was the right thing to do at the time and intended to regain communication with his loved ones if he had come out alive?

  15. In Jon Katz Geeks either Jesse or Jon the author himself are the main characters if the novel Jesse is different from all the characters in the other books we have read so far, because we have only read books from far in the past. He’s very different from Odysseus, he is not a leader but also not a follower he is one of those people that are in the middle. He actually reminds me a lot of myself, I’m probably one of the only students that have played or even knows what Quake is. He is nothing like Atticus, Scout, and Jem from To Kill a Mockingbird. He is definitely not like Antigone at all, and lives in America which is much different than the ancient world. If there was no technology in this book then Jesse would be most like Atticus, if they were the same age.

    1. I agree that Jesse is definitely different from most of the characters we've read about. Jesse is very independent. But don't you think he is a little like Atticus? They are both very loyal to their friends and will try their best in anything. They also love to learn new information.

  16. The main character in Greeks is Jesse. He is a computer genius who wants to find a better place to live instead of Idaho. I think he is similar to the character Jem, from the book To Kill A Mockingbird. Jem, like Jesse, wants to grow up, do big things, and move out. Jem also likes to think he is very intelligent, similar to Jesse, but Jesse on the other hand, is a genius.

  17. Tim O’Brien is the main character in The Things They Carried he is in the Vietnam War he doesn’t really have any friends outside of his unit yet. Which is different than any other main character in the books. O’Brien is from the late 20th century which not really any of the books are from. Him being drafted into the war is something that hasn’t happened in any books. O’Brien is kind of a new guy in this he doesn’t seem to have any enemies except the Vietnamese people, unlike with the Odysseus from The Odyssey he has some gods and a cyclops as enemies.

  18. I believe Morrie in Tuesdays with Morrie and Jem from To Kill a Mockingbird are similar in character, because they are both daring characters. Although Jem is more daring in a physical was by touching the Radley house, Morrie is daring in his psychological ways. Like how he would explore the ways of the mind and show his students by not talking at the beginning of class, no one talked for the first fifteen minutes of class. Morrie’s point was to show the students how humans thought long silences were embarrassing. When Mitch was in that class of Morrie’s he proclaimed, “And slowly a discussion begins- as Morrie has wanted all along- about the effect of silence on human relations.” (53) Jem and Morrie are also alike in their leadership skills. Jem would always try his best to be a good example that Scout and Dill could look up to. Morrie also wanted people to look up to him in a good as a professor, and now an old dying man of ALS.Just like Morrie breaks the news to his last college class he will teach, “...I assume you are all here for the social Psychology class. I have been teaching this course for twenty years, and this is the first time I can say there is a risk in taking it, because I have a fatal illness. I may not live to finish the semester.” (9)

  19. Chris in Into the Wild is very much like Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird in many ways, most of which are in their personalities. They both seem very impulsive and have a certain sense for adventure, though Chris's may be a bit stronger. They're both very intellectual compared to most of the people they are around as well. However, scout does seem more aggressive than Chris, even though she did grow up to be more mature in her own story. In a way they are very similar with just a few differences.

  20. In the novel Into the Wild, the main character is Chris McCandless. He is a man with a love for adventure, nature, and modest. He leaves his family and his traditional lifestyle to set out on a journey to reach Alaska. In doing this, he encounters various people who help him out along the way. However, whenever possible, Chris tries to get along without the help of others and often rejects the offerings. In these ways, I could compare him to Jem from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. This comparison can be made because Jem is an adventurous boy who enjoys doing unusual things, however, he also likes to keep to himself at times, just as Chris does. Although, a difference I could see between the two of them is that Jem cares deeply for his family and looks up to his father quite a bit, while although Chris may feel that way about his family, it doesn't come through in his actions since he abandoned his family and lost all contact with them. These characters are both complex individuals who offer a lot to the novels.

  21. In the book The Color of Water, the main character and author, James McBride is so quiet, smart, shy, and very polite. Even when someone says something horrible to his face he will not turn around and punch them back. Instead he will walk away and be humble. He was called horrible things: "I felt the blood rush to my face and sank low in my chair, seething inside, yet I did nothing" ( 89-90). A character from another book that resembles James would be Lennie from Of Mice and Men. He is shy, quiet, and most definitely very polite to everyone. Many people talk crap to him and he just lets it go by like no one had said anything. Not only that but also Lennie is given grief for being mentally retarded and James is given grief for being black. They both suffer losses and are two totally different people, but alike in many ways.

  22. Chris McCandless is the main character in the book Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer. His traits of determination are similar to Antigone’s. Chris is determined to go to Alaska and live of the land, he refuses to let anyone stop him or get in his way. This is similar to Antigone’s determination to do the right thing and bury her brother. Antigone also wouldn’t let anyone convince her to stop, she didn’t listen to her sister just as Chris didn’t listen to his family about going to law school. Another similarity between them is how they both died for what they believe in. Antigone was sentenced to death for wanting to bury her brother, she died alone. Chris also died alone, presumable from starvation because he was living out in the wilderness of Alaska. Both of these characters demonstrate their determination and independence through their actions.

  23. The main character in Jon Krakauer novel, Into the Wild, is Chris McCandless. Chris is similar to Antigone in the play Antigone. Chris and Antigone are similar because they both do what they think is right even if others do not think it is right. Chis for instance decides to adventure on his own without telling anybody and Antigone decides to bury her brother the proper way and not the way that Creon wants too. The people Chris encounters along his journey do not think its right that he has decided to leave his family without any notice and some of things he had done on his journey like burning his money. The town that Antigone lives in disapproves that she buried her brother without the consent of Creon. There actions are the reason why I think they are similar.

  24. The main character in Tuesdays With Morrie, is Mitch. Mitch has a wife that he never gets to spend time with. He has a journaling job for sports and is gone almost all the time. Mitch thinks that money is power. That with all this money can have that fancy car or that nice big house. Creon, from the play Antigone, is much like Mitch. They both think that having power makes them more wanted. In reality it hurts every one else they love arond them. Mitch's wife wants to start a family, but Mitch works. Creon killed his loved ones in order to have the power he wanted. They both regret these decisions.

  25. I would have to say Morrie from the book Tuesdays with Morrie and Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird. I think that these two characters are much alike due to they are always being positive on everyone and themselves. They are so kind and have so much respect. Morrie doesn’t want to see anyone hurt or sad, he isn’t even sad that he is dying. Atticus is someone who doesn’t let anyone else hurt someone else. He didn’t let his kids, Scout and Jem pick on Boo Radley or have arguments with Mrs. Dubose.

  26. A hero to me is someone who pumps everyone else up. Doesn’t let anyone feel negative, doesn’t even feel negative about themselves. In Tuesdays with Morrie, Morrie is the hero. He makes people happy by the inspirational things he says. “I don’t allow myself any more self-pity than that. A little each morning, a few tears, and that’s all” (57) Morrie doesn’t want him or other people to feel depressed because it’s another day they got to live. “It’s only horrible to watch my body slowly wilt away to nothing. But it’s also wonderful because of all the time I get to say good-bye.” (57) He wants everyone to life their life to the fullest and thats a hero.

  27. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is his story of what his experiences in the war were like. In any of the other books we've read, they have been about experiences with trying to fit in or not understanding the importance of fitting in. Tim's story is about how he was in the war, what struggles he had to go through then and now. It tells us his experiences of watching his friends get shot in the back or the head, how they just had to walk past and act like it was no big deal. I don't think any other main characters had to go through this emotional pain.

    ReplyDelete
  28. In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien is the main character and he is like the other characters in other readings because he is a powerful person. He takes the truth and adds details the way any person does, to make things seem more true.

  29. I feel like Mitch is a lot like Skout from To Kill a Mockingbird. Mitch does not realize the hurt he is putting on people until reality finally hits. Just like Skout doesn't realize making fun of Boo Radley when he just wants a friend. Mitch finally realizes once he found out his old professor was dying that it was time to step up and make a difference. Just like Skout finally steps up once Boo shows how sweet and innocent he really is.

  30. Atticus from the book To Kill a Mockingbird seems to have a lot of similarities to Tim O'Brien in The Things They Carried. One of these similarities is that they both seem to have this old wisdom to them. One of the things different between the two is that Atticus is not a real person in reality, but Tim O'Brien is. Another similarity is that they are both good with guns. Atticus was once the best shooter in all of Maycomb and Tim is in the Vietnam war where guns are everywhere around them.
